Korean People's Army Air Force (KPAAF)
History
Origin
The KPAAF was established in 1947 as the Korean People's Army Air Corps, with Soviet assistance. The group began operating from Korean bases in October and moved to North Korea in late November 1950.
Cold War Era
Most KPAAF aircraft are from the Cold War era from the 1950s to the 1980s. The KPAAF flew combat missions during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War.
Air Battle of South Korea
The Air Battle of South Korea was an air campaign early in the Korean War occurring roughly from 25 June to 20. The KPAAF flew more than 1,000 sorties during the campaign, but were outnumbered and outgunned by the United Nations forces.
Modern Status
While the KPAAF in theory has more than 400 operational tactical fighter aircraft, these are nearly all older-generation models that would be no match for modern Western aircraft in air-to-air combat.
