FA Statement on Changes to the Emirates FA Cup

FA Cup Reforms Unveiled

Modernizing the Historic Competition

The Football Association (FA) has announced a series of significant changes to the Emirates FA Cup, one of the oldest and most prestigious football competitions in the world. These changes aim to modernize the tournament and ensure its continued relevance in the rapidly evolving football landscape.

The most notable change is the introduction of a "Round of 32" stage, which will see Premier League clubs enter the competition earlier than before. This change is designed to increase the competitiveness of the early rounds and create more opportunities for lower-tier clubs to challenge the established elite.

Other changes include the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in all knockout fixtures, the elimination of replays for all matches up to the quarter-finals, and a new prize money structure that will reward clubs for their progress in the tournament.

The FA believes that these changes will enhance the overall quality and excitement of the FA Cup while preserving its rich history and traditions. The tournament will continue to provide a platform for clubs from all levels of the English football pyramid to compete against each other, with the potential for giant-killing upsets and memorable moments.

The new format of the FA Cup will come into effect from the 2023-24 season. The draw for the first round will be held on August 11, 2023.
